unanimous decision, a judger can ask them to stay or call a mistrial. In real world, guilt or not guilt or mistrial happen all the time, I don't think they all setup by the judgers as you suggested. I was pick as jury candidtate many times. Maybe because of selfish, but never became the member for one reason another, denied by either sides of the lawyers. I don't think judges can have big impact in the court. On the other hand, I don't think it is a wise justice system. Just think about the 12 members from regular people, many times they just common home mom, dady. To avoid any bias, they have have no pre-knowledge, experience related to the case. For cases, particular civil cases like contract dispute... how they know the technical details to make correct verdict.
