I urge the Bureau to change the format of the race question by removing Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and other sub-Asian checkboxes, and replacing them with a generic Asian/Asian American checkbox.  This is the least you can do to ensure that Asian Americans are treated equally as white and black Americans.

Correct race question format in U.S. Census 2020

The Census Bureau formally invited public comment on the 2020 Census. The section for Asian Americans on the US. Census should have the exact same format as the section used for other communities. 

 

Please follow the link below to speak out against the proposed format wording for Asian Americans. As many short, simple, factual submissions as possible hold the greatest likelihood of influencing the final outcome. No editorializing is needed, only a succinct statement is enough Comments are due by August 7th.

Example comment: 

 

I urge the Bureau to change the format of the race question by removing Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and other sub-Asian checkboxes, and replacing them with a generic Asian/Asian American checkbox. This is the least you can do to ensure that Asian Americans are treated equally as white and black Americans. This format is an unnecessary measure that will fail to improve data accuracy or response rate on the US Census. Instead, it will alienate Asian Americans by labeling them perpetual foreigners.
