Harley Davidsons are not necessarily made in America.  They are assembled in America, with parts made in Germany, Italy, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, and yes -- China.

If the US raises tariff on imports, it will only make Harley Davidson's motorcycles more expensive in the domestic market.

And, Harley Davidson is more of a leisure brand -- they are not used for daily commute purposes.  They do not meet the need of the majority of the Chinese consumers -- therefore, it will not likely destroy mainland China's motorcycle industries as you suggested.

Harley Davidson could have avoided the tariff altogether if it manufactured in mainland China -- like how it did in India.  It chose not to do that.  (India has a 100% tariff, by the way, much higher than China's.)  It also could have avoided the tariff had the TPP been implemented (that of which was supported by Harley Davidson, ironically).  Please think about that.

Please also avoid thinking that any one person or individual is smarter than the rest of the professionals in trade.  They are much more knowledgeable on this topic than, for example, Mr. Trump.
