面对“不断的践踏”，最基本的对应就是“obdurate commitment to the tradition”。践踏者意在撼动美国民主政体的支柱。对捍卫者来说，此时重要的更是“unbending fidelity to rules and norms” ，而不是 play 对方的 game。文中说加兰要捍卫的“post-Watergate reformes... did an effective job at blunting Donald Trump's desire to turn the Justice Department into his plaything”，当是如此。
