Book: The Impact of the Phonetic Alphabet on the Development of Western Civilizatioin

Published: 1986, 265 pages

Author: Robert K. Logan, Ph.D.

From seminal work done in collaboration with Marshall McLuhan, Robert K. Logan creates an intriguing synthesis of ideas about the effect of alphabets on the development of civilizations.

Robert K. Logan's The Alphabet Effect is a fascinating study of the evolution of writing systems. It describes the dramatic role the phonetic alphabet has played in the development of Western Civilization, in contrast with the role of pictographic writing systems in China and elsewhere. From the use of notched sticks or symbols first used in ancient times, to the alphabets in common use today, he draws a variety of conclusions about how societies advance. Logan also show how the advent of mass communications and use of computers affecct how we communicate.

Dr. Logan is a physics professor at the University of Toronto, cross-appointed to the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, where he teaches and carries out research in the field of computer applications in education. Fo six years he collaborated with Marshall McLuhan, with whom he published two articles.

"Any reader who suspects that language is what makes us human will appreciate this excellent overview of linguistic, educational, and communications theory"
