「人穷志不穷」，與「人穷志短」，二語同時存在于中國成語。

類似的情形，亦見西諺常語：

It’s one thing to be poor, another to be dishonest! 

A man is not honest simply because he never had a chance to steal.

一方面說人應該向善，一方面又說人會因環境甚至必然地壞而又壞。

勉人或自勵，人說前句。見人或自己失敗了，便用後句做事後諸葛。中西人性觀大體所見略同。
