you gotta post info such as in what screen it got stuck.
i think if you messed up with the jumper, the hd's will simply keep spinning.

take your new drive out, set the old to master and boot
i'm sure it will work, then add your new drive, set to slave and try it.

nowadays it's probably just use the cable select option.
