they don't handle it. What resolution your TV has is what you will see, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p. You can't improve that part wihtout changing to a better TV.
BTW, xbox itself is defaulted at 480i. if you connect it to a HDTV, you need to change the resolution to higher from the control panel of the console.
