Lotus Note and Blackboard.com

I am using Blackboard to teach a course. I can send emails to students but can't see their replies. So I asked a tech person. He said Blackboard.com can not receive emails. I should use Lotus Note to receive regular emails. What is Lotus Note? (Embarrassed). Please explain.
