out of memory question

just bought a dell dimension4700 with 2GB ram(4*512MB), windowXP home edition. But when i ran the program like matlab and the taskManager showed memory usage over 1.01GB, the matlab gave me "out of memory" error message, what's wrong here? any wrong settings? Hope got advices from bigShrimps or Lobsters. Thanks so much!
