Redhat9 source CD installation

CDs 4,5 and 6 contain a bunch of source RPMs (.src.rpm), how
do I install them so that I can change and recompile the Linux kernel?

What I did: I entered the 'SRPMS' directory of each of the source CDs,
and do 'rpm -i ./*.rpm', but it did not work, because if I check any of the
source RPMs by 'rpm -q xxx.src.rpm', it tells me 'not installed'.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
