The possible reasons for what you said are the driver for the motherboard and something on the HDD. So, if you have the driver for the new MB and you have a copy of XP, you can try to "repair" while booting with the new MB. I don't know in this case the XP Key is required or not. Just try it using the "borrow from the store" rule...
