Activation means that you can not use the operating system more than 50 days unless you use the authoritative CD-Key to register your copy with Microsfot.

You can activiate your OS through internet, telephone. You will be asked to choose how do you like to do at the end of the installation.

Under Microsoft's user agreement XP cannot be installed on any other computers, either it is a desktop or laptop. In practice people can use the same CD-Key on several computers with no problems.

If you have the money, it is better to purchase the XP installation copy instead of the upgrade version if you respect the intelectual property.
