help! - network connection

system: dell laptop, win2k, 2wire HomePortal, 2wire wireless adapter
problem: every time, when system start, unable connet to network. There is, always, a icon in the taskbar showing "Local Area Connection Network Cable Unplugged", and the HomePortal showing "HomePortal not yet activited"

Only way I find to get connected is that I have to Shut Down -> Stand By first, and restart the system. Then, network get connected.

Any idea? please help. Thanks!
