You've got it wrong

Don't lower your resolution, but increase your font size.

Your computer doesn't support the lowered resolution hence the black sides. I figure you are using CRT not LCD display, correct? It is possible under the lowered resolution to adjust CRT scan area.

Can't think of other reason why there are black sides.
