The situation sounds like the LCD back light (or the inverter) is bad.

Normally you can find the back light or the inverter online, but in my opinion, a 6-8 years old laptop is not worth to fix it. The light and inverter with shipping will cost you anywhere from $50 - $150, and today, a $200 netbook would be much better than that old notebook.
