If you are computer science guy, especially if you are asking about the Intelligent Agents, the answer is that an agent is a computer system that is capable of automous actions without any directly interventions from human beings or other agents. For achieving its goals, an agent can co-operate with other agents or services in a multi-agent enviroments. If an agent is implemented as hardware, it could be a robot. If an agent is implemented as software, somebody call it "softbot".

In simple words, the research about a single agent is the study of artificial intelligence. The research about multi-agent systems is the study of distributed artificial intelligence.
