Well, I'm sure hard working is always appreciated in small business, based on my experience in a few small companies. Because the owner knows your contribution, which makes him be sucessful.
Very important, you make sure that the others know you got the work done, don't let the others take your credits.
In a large corp, then you're right. Hard working isn't necessary appreciated. That's all about people skill and finger pointing.
