About 50% company I worked use RMAN. So it is up to DBA to decide what to use. Some company have well developed script to do hot backup some company don't. Oracle have a lot of new futures in each release and not everyone use this new future. In oracle 10g,sometime you have to use RMAN, for examle ASM and cross platform transportable tablespace.
