Is research very helpful in residency match for medical student?

My son graduated with math major, and started to work as a software engineer two years ago. Now he is a first year medical school student. He will do math and computer related research  in a hospital this summer, and may continue the research in Fall.
Is this kind of research very helpful in residency match? Thanks.
