it depends. i was verbally offered a position a few months back after a lenghty interview process, and it took nearly 4 weeks to receive the formal offer letter. i waited for 3 weeks without hearing anything from the company, and then made a courtesy call. i was told they still kept the verbal offer, the reason they couldn't sign off the paper work was that the manager in charge was out of town in oversea...
