Which is better, to apply myself, or through a recruiter?

I know a company is hiring. I applied for the positions in the company many times years ago, but never got any response. Now the same company is hiring again. A recruiter contacted me regarding the position. Usually the recruiter could have some relationship with the hiring manager. But the company needs to pay him/her if I was hired finally.

Which is better, to apply online myself, or let the recruiter submit my resume?
