I would not say anything until

the opportunity is clear, i.e. you would get an offer if there is no objection from yoru current group. Once you know they will give you an offer, you'd better let your current boss know. What I am not clear is: if yoru current boss or group learned about your interests in other groups from a third party or other channel, what would happen? You have to think about that scenario and consequences.
