I think that you did right thing. It happened to my previous job and I got a little trouble by listening the complains and added a little my comments/opinion because the coworker complained me to other people immediately...

Even after I am out of the previous work place, she still tried to set up lunches with me. I like to catch up a little with my old coworkers. We had one lunch and she complained other coworkers during the whole lunch and tried to make me say something. I was quiet and she was not happy......Now, she invited me to have a lunch again and I kept postponing....Maybe I should just refuse her directly or not to reply her e-mail at all...Why not, she played double face to me.....

I am learning to say "No, Thanks!" sometimes....

I understand it is easier to say it than do it.
