请教老师: 美国大学允许faculty做不同领域(跨度很大)的研究吗?

我想在Dept. of Industrial Engineering 或机械系申请CAD (Computer-Aided Design) 领域的faculty位子. 我也做过指纹识别的研究. 指纹识别属于EE领域, 在Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. 在美国大学的机械系或Dept. of Industrial Engineering 没有指纹识别研究方向. 请教:

如果我能找到 CAD 领域的 faculty 位子, CAD是我申请经费的主要研究方向. 我也想在指纹识别方向写 proposal 申请经费以开展研究, 机械系或Dept. of Industrial Engineering的系主任或学校会同意吗?
