Your reference should take care his period

I assume this reference is not working in the most recent company.
In this case, he should only say good things about you in the period you worked with him.
He doesn't have to know or talk anything about how unhaooy you were with your previous manager.
You do not need let him know too much dark story of how bad the relation is.
