I think you need to keep in mind that the truth may lie somewhere in the middle, i.e. your boss may ahve picked the other one, but it was under the pressure of upper manager. None of them wants to look bad in front of you. Since this is alrady in past tense, finding out who did what is not very meaningful. but you can use this as an opportunity to open up your communication with both managers for future promotion.
