It would be nice that one can be liked by the boss.

while, I would rather be respected than be liked. The reason is quite simple：one is in your control and the other is not. Boss is boss, and no matter how hard you try to win him/her over, its a matter of personal chemistry.

Focusing less on whether your boss like you (as what I did :-), smart me! kidding), maybe he/she will like you more.
