question about how to move out of my group

I am working in a group that focus on things not very interesting to me. I have numberous problems with my current group and want to move on for a while. One of the top level people from corporate has served as our consultant for my project. We get along very well. I am thinking to talk with this consultant to see if there is any interesting position in his department. but I know he would want me to stay to continue working on my project. This is sth that his department eventually would collaborate and work on as well. Is there an approach that I can let him know about my frustration with my current group ( he knows some) and ask him for a transfer?
