What AGENTS said may not be true

Except the insiders, no body knew what really happenned in the hiring procerss.
Without tight relation with the hiring manager, the Agent don't know what happenned.
Even thay knew what happenned, Agent may not tell you the truth.

Therefore, not worth waste your time to guess what happenned. Just keep looking for next one.
