"办公室里摆满了孩子的照片" - why not talking about the layoff has put lots of stress to families with kids, etc, and your kids (assumption) will affected as well. certainly he will be insterested to talk all the hobbies about his kids, etc. this topic will last at least 20 minutes (j/k).

"就问了下我还有没有面试别的工作" - NO! I don't have any interview opportunities. I love this company, and I want to work here!!

事先的功课 is important, and interview skills is very important too.
