If you are at a lower position, you need to make argument, not to win what you are arguing about, but to show this high position person that you have your own point, you have a different strategy, big picture view, or whatever that needs to move you up, and you can be positioned at a higher level. Without argument, they can't know anything about you.

Of cause, argument is not the only way. Saying sth in agreement is also useful. Teh effect however, is not as good as argument. When people agree with each other, the attention level is low. In argument however, everyone is hyped.
