Nobody's looking for being loyal these days

You've probably been out of the job market for too long. "Loyalty" is out of fashion long time ago. Everybody looks for what-can-you-do-for-me-today. By that I mean both the employers and the employees, but shhhhhh, nobody's saying it out loud.

I can't imagine company A would want to pay you to stick around for two weeks if you end up resigning shortly after starting. As to the reason, How about telling the truth? It's all business, learn NOT to be sorryin business dealings. Learn, baby, learn.
