I think you unnecessarily make things more complicated than they really are.

You boss may or may not want to let you go, but who knows. The simplest and most effective way is to sit down and have a chat with him. Discuss why he canceled your project. Ask him what his evaluation on your performance, etc.

Talk to him directly and go from there.
