It is definitely a good idea to join a company 401k. Most companies match 50-75% of your contribution up to 6% of your pay.

So if you contribute 6% of your pay (say $6000, if you make $100k), the company will contribute $3000, it is equivalent of getting a 50% return on that $6000 investment, which is very hard to beat.

Also, it's a very tax effective way to build up your retirement savings.
