Is that weird?

A recuiter helped me before just called me and told me that the position I applied last year is open again because the hiring company just let the guy they hired go.

The fired guy and me were final two candidates. The company hired that guy because they thought he had more experience than I did. The hiring company put that guy on probation and then found out that he was not a good fit.

Now, the agent is asking me if I am still instereted in the position since I would have better chance to get it.

I am totally confused. Have anybody here ever heard that a hiring company let the top 1 candidate go after months and then turn to the top 2 candidate? It looks so weird to me.
