Rental Car definitely bill you

If it is rental, the rental car company will bill you if you dont pay directly (may even add some extra charges).

Private car - if you dont ever intend to drive the same car into Canada, probably you can get away from it.

How did you get the ticket ? by radar or by policeman himself ? Canadian policemen usually very nice if they see you are from U.S. they usually only give you some lecture and warning but not write you a ticket.
