I think this is an accurate assessment and a likely outcome for Mr. Bi. The real reason, which the author was unable to recognize or unwilling to admit, is that the majority of Chinese feel that Mao was a great savior and Bi offended them. Bi obviously realized this too late.

Well Mr. Bi can kiss his job goodbye. After all Mr. Figueroa of Univision got fired for making fun of Michelle Obama, and I doubt any Fox personality can get away by calling George Washington as a slave owner.

Employee, especially employee that's the public face of a corporation should really watch their behavior in public and maybe even in private. We just went through a NBA team owner being forced to sell his team because of some text he sent in private.

Critizing Mao is one thing - trying to cast doubt on the very real historical oppression of the Chinese peasantry is another. Reversing verdicts on the need for the liberation of the peasantry would undermine the entire basis for the Chinese state since 1949. This would be akin to a US leading commentator joking around that slavery was not so bad and that Abraham Lincoln tormented us. For us, even 150 years later, it would not be acceptable. For China this is way out of bounds, and rightly so.

His career will be severely damaged in China, just like his American counterparts, such as Bill Maher, Mel Gibson, or the former Clippers Owner. In every country, there are certain people you simply can not badmouth, privately or publicly.
