This is the incredible story of a young woman who grew up on the campus of a Christian college in pre-Mao Beijing China. It is now out in English and recently became available in electronic mode. I loved Yanjing People! As time went on, our true-life heroine, Penny Zhao, continued through university no matter that the revolution had occurred. She documented all the activities, some violent, and went through periods of anarchy and starvation. She pursued her dreams. Just as the Cultural Revolution was breaking, her scholarly sociologist father was "criticized" and soon became deathly ill. Her delicate mother gathered strength to go on and lead the family. Penny Zhao was dogged still in the family's survival and triumph. You must read Yanjing People to see how that happened! translate to Chinese.
