Oh boy, welcome to last year, and you just found out?:)

It's been well reported that certain areas would cut power temporarily, to protect equipment, against constant up and down sparks. It was done during Irene, and it's done during Sandy as well.

Cutting your power for a few hours, to prevent potential much longer outage. It's not another conspiracy run by thousands people in secret again.
