SJD,法学博士学位,主要是给外国人读的

"真正的美国法学博士，是在J.D.之后，重新回到法学院，读大概五年，慢的要七八年拿的学位，叫S.J.D. （Doctor of Juridical Science），才是我们通常理解意义上的法学博士。这是给真正有志于在法学领域从事学术研究的人攻读的学位，主要方向就是去大学或其他机构任教，研究等。"

其实这个SJD学位主要是因外国学生的需求而设置的，多是给外国人读的。美国法学院的教授多是JD出身，不信你查查哈佛的法学教授名录。

确实，除了在学校，美国一般人不把有JD的叫Dr.So and So. 美国一般人叫有MD的为Dr. so and so, 是指某某医生，不是指某某博士。在英语中医生和博士碰巧是同一个字。早期，MD 是指 medical degree.

JD MD， 都是第一专业学位（first professional degree), 好多情况下，第一专业学位就是该专业的最高学位。A first professional degree is an academic degree designed to prepare the holder for a particular career or profession, fields where scholarly research and academic activity are not the work, but rather the practice of a profession. In many cases, the first professional degree is also the terminal degree because usually no further advanced degree is required for practice in that field even though more advanced academic degrees may exist.

我有几个朋友是拿MFA学位拿到美国大学艺术有关专业的tenure教授的。MFA也是终级学位, 虽然不是doctorate degree. 看来要不了多久，也会改叫，doctor of fine arts. 谁不喜欢戴高帽子呢？银行里不也是一大把的副总裁（VP）吗？ LOL
