Self-confidence is the key.

You look at the Chinese (Taiwan, mainland China) MIT/Harvard graduates in my company, none of them wants to stand up and say that they want to be a group leader.  They are very intelligent, but so quiet and bury themselves in the lab most of the time.  You need to market yourself well to get into the management group.
