I still have some savings and that is what we are living off now. But my bf does not have much $ left. Even though his last pay was $500K.

First of all, income tax is a huge chunck of your pay. He used his bonus money to pay off his student loans at 2 ivy leagues (undergrad and grad) and a big diamond ring for his short-lived prior marriage. His ex demanded a $50K ring and never returned it to him after the divorce. Also he has lived for a yr w/o pay. He was off work earlier than I did. His H1b ran out last year (he is Canadian who was married to an American and was filing for his greencard so he did not bother to renew it), so he had to take unpaid leave for 1 yr so he went to Europe, which also means he was not paid 2007 bonus. At the time he came back to the US, the market was totally different.
