this is new to me. would you mind sharing your allison model #?

Mine is MD3066.  i have never heard that an allison transmission requires shifter going into "n" before going into "r".  really like to learn... 

the only time i know of pressing "n" is to activate eletronic fluid level sensor for checking fluid level.
