grating noise

I am not sure it was cranking though. It sounded like some grating noise. I turned the key in the afternoon and it started. It also started this morning even though today is colder than yesterday. There's some corrosion on one of the terminal and I need to clean it this weekend. Do you know how to check cold cranking capibility of battery?
