A member of our local Cars & Croissants group recently distributed the following information on penetrating oils, which I thought I'd share for those of you who are looking for an easy way to loosen the three bolts on the Spyder's exhaust manifold (commonly referred to as "The Three Amigos") when replacing the header.

In 2007, Machinist's Workshop published information on various penetrating oils, testing various penetrants for 'break-out' torque on rusted nuts. The torque load needed to loosen the 'scientifically rusted' bolts using the various penetrants were as follows:

No Oil used .................................. 516 pounds
WD-40 ................................... ...... 238 pounds
PB Blaster ................................... .. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ................................127 pounds
Kano Kroil ................................... .. 106 pounds
50% ATF - 50% Acetone mix............53 pounds

A recent Drexel University engineering school study (found here) further supports the use of 'homemade' acetone blends made from vegetable oil and acetone as a better and more cost-effective alternative to commercial penetrating oil WD-40.
