LANSING | A Canadian woman died Tuesday after the car she was riding in was struck by a semi during heavy rain on eastbound Interstate 80/94 near the Indiana state line, Illinois State Police said.
Elizabeth Anderson, 57, of Ontario, Canada, was pronounced dead at 6:23 a.m. at Community Hospital in Munster, according to the Lake County coroner's office.
The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma suffered in a motor vehicle accident.
Anderson was a passenger in a Toyota that was heading east in the left lane of the Kingery Expressway, police said.
They driver of the Toyota struck a patch of water, lost control and crossed into the path of an eastbound Volvo semitrailer, police said.
The front of the semi struck the right side of the Toyota, causing extensive damage to both vehicles, police said.
Anderson was taken to Community Hospital. The drivers of the Toyota and the semi were not seriously injured, police said.
The crash in Lansing forced the closure of four right lanes and jammed traffic on the expressway, causing delays back to the Lincoln Oasis during the morning rush.
All lanes reopened just before 8 a.m.
