You are right, 10 years ago Explorer is probably smaller than current CRV, but 10 years ago, every car is smaller. Size is a relative concept. When everybody drives a Civic, your Civic is probably safe enough. If everybody drives a big SUV your Civic is a death trap. Also, car safety ratings are the comparison among same categories - about the same mass. It's based on the collision between your car and a still object with a infinite mass. If your Civic collides with a Explorer, Explorer has a larger mass than your Civic. Think hard about this.
