Go to a shop if you have too much money to throw away

You just need to check engine oil regularly (don't wait until 3K miles to do it, let alone 6K miles) and add oil when needed. 1 quart of oil per 1K miles is not too bad. I would say for an old car even 1 qt per 500 miles is tolerable.
