if you have a VIN,submit it via carfax.com
Then watch out for how many records:

for a car
for >= 5 years, additional 1 record for each year (smog check)?

So if the number of records is low, your car PROBABLY has clean history (luck is good). If the number of records is high, like 10(?) or more, you know there are some unusual activities (stay away from it).

Anybody like to share his/her records?
Mine has 4 and 6 for clean title (both paid off car loan)
